Hey there 👋

We all know that every charting library has a ceiling. Sooner or later someone asks for a visualization that isn't in the dropdown, and you either squeeze the data into the closest built-in chart or park the request in the backlog.

As of this week, there's a third option.

🧩 Describe a chart type, Lightdash builds it

Need a chart that doesn't exist yet? Describe it in a prompt and Lightdash generates it with data apps. And it isn't a one-off: you get a reusable chart type that works with any of your data.

You test it live in the generator with real data from any explore. Once you save the visualization, it behaves like a built-in: pick it in the Explorer, drop it on dashboards, use filters and date zoom on it.

Holded's data team has been building visualizations this way already:

⚡️ To try this out, you'll need data apps enabled on your instance.

🏗️ Dashboards were never the destination

Custom chart types are one piece of a bigger argument we published last week: dashboards are the lowest common denominator for sharing insights. Every team gets the same fixed view and does the last mile of work themselves, in a spreadsheet or a deck.

Data apps flip that. Describe the deck, report, or forecasting tool you want, and it deploys in minutes on your governed semantic layer: permissions, metric definitions, and query visibility included. OakNorth, a UK bank, has built 128 of them.

Hamzah wrote up a piece on where we think this is all going.

💌 Scheduled deliveries now write their own message

The delivery modal got a redesign, and deliveries can write a summary that reflects the actual data in each send, generated fresh every time. Toggle on AI-enhanced message, add a prompt for what the summary should focus on, and the AI takes it from there.

Recipients get the headline numbers in the message itself, instead of an email that says "see attached" and an attachment nobody opens.

AI-enhanced messages need the AI agents add-on, available on Cloud Pro and Enterprise plans.

✅ Verified content is out of beta

Verification and AI agents now share one source of truth. Content an admin verifies and answers an agent verifies live in the same place, so the Lightdash MCP can pull from all of it, and external agents like Claude or Cursor discover the content your team trusts.

It runs in both directions: agents prefer verified content when answering questions, and any AI answer you verify becomes verified content too. Developers (and any custom role with the manage content verification permission) can now verify charts and dashboards as well. No more waiting on an admin.
