The next time you check your email results, don’t stop at the open rate.

There are a couple key signals that can help you decide who to follow up with next.

First, look for repeated opens. One open might not mean much, but someone who opens the same email several times just might be looking for answers. Which often leads to…

Spikes of interest. When a reader opens multiple emails you’ve sent them in short order, it probably means one of two things. Maybe they’re just going through all their messages to tidy up their inbox. But if you see them opening multiple emails across a couple days, you’re clearly not being sent to the trash. They’re coming back to re-read or maybe even forward your message.

Those contacts are giving you a reason to follow up with a more personalized message.

You don’t need to mention that you’ve been tracking their activity. Use what they clicked to make the conversation relevant. Send them a similar listing or ask if they want an updated home value. Depending on the context, it might even be a great time to send a text or make a quick call.
