ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, and Perplexity are generating over 50 billion website requests a day. And most sites are failing them badly.

Here's what's actually happening, step by step:

Discovery: robots.txt and brittle sitemaps sent AI tools to the wrong locations. Or block them entirely.

Access: 22% of AI crawler requests get rejected industry-wide. Old bot-blocking rules from Cloudflare or your security tool are probably still on.

Rendering: If your content loads client-side, most agents see a blank page. Google's Gemini is the only exception.

Parsing: Agents read your page's accessibility tree, the same structure screen readers use. Generic divs instead of real buttons and headings confuse them.

Authentication: If your site doesn’t have an easy, secure option to bypass logins, users will hand agents their actual passwords. That's a real security problem.

Checkout: Unlabeled form fields, no structured data, confirmation states agents can't detect.

The fix for all six is mostly stuff technical SEO has told you to do for a decade: semantic HTML, server-side rendering, clean sitemaps, clear labels.

The difference now is agents are the ones reading it.
