Hi John,

Susie didn’t try to do everything at once. And she definitely didn’t start writing any emails. Instead, she started with the one thing that makes behavior automation possible: behavior data.

First, Susie wrote down what she wants to track, also known as a data tracking plan.

She downloaded the free worksheets and started with properties that almost every SaaS needs:

identifier

email

first_name

last_name

company_name

role

signed_up_at

trial_ends_at

billing_plan

billing_state (trial, active, past_due, sponsored, cancelled)

billing_interval

Susie's product, Sparkle, is a photo editing tool, so she added a couple properties for product usage:

albums

photos

And a few events:

photo_uploaded

album_created

subscription_cancelled

Susie took her data tracking plan to her engineering team, and they implemented the integration in just a few hours (equipped with the API docs). It was easy because the engineers knew exactly what they needed to track.

Boom! User profiles started appearing in Userlist.

Susie could now see who was new, who was active, and who was falling behind. The system started to feel less intimidating.

Next, Susie will use this data to bring order to the chaos: segments that update themselves.
