Hi John,

With her product data flowing, Susie could finally see what was happening inside their product. But the user list still felt messy — too many people, all in different stages.

So Susie created a few simple, living segments for her lifecycle stages: Trials, Customers, and beyond.

Susie identified conditions for each of these segments:

Trials (billing_state = trial)

Trials: Expiring (billing_state = trial and trial_expires_at in less than 3 days)

Customers (billing_state = active)

Customers: Advanced (billing_state = active and albums > 100)

Customers: Inactive (performed event photo_uploaded 0 times during the last 30 days)

These segments updated automatically as users moved forward with the product. No spreadsheets, no manual sorting — just clear, real-time groups based on behavior conditions.

Finally, the system felt organized instead of overwhelming.

Susie also noticed a connection between segments and workflows she wants to eventually run. Someone joining a segment would mean triggering a workflow. E.g. when someone joined a Trials segment, they would receive the User Onboarding workflow.

Susie’s automation magically fell into place.

In the next email, Susie will take the next step: creating her first workflow.
