Here's a roundup of the latest news out of Grafana Labs this month, including two big open source releases and GrafanaCON 2026 sessions now being available on demand.

Tempo 3.0: a new architecture for scale and lower TCO

Tempo 30

The latest major release of Tempo, the open source distributed tracing backend, helps reduce storage costs and overhead, while improving overall performance and reliability. Highlights of Tempo 3.0 include:

New Kafka-compatible architecture: Splits the read and write paths and drops object storage replication from 3x to 1x, cutting storage costs for large microservices deployments.

TraceQL metrics is now GA: By querying ad-hoc metrics directly from trace data, you can easily answer questions about performance, error rates, and more.

Faster query performance: An enhanced vParquet5 storage format and built-in TraceQL optimizations reduce query latency.

k6 2.0: AI-assisted performance testing

k6 20

k6 2.0, the latest major release of the open source performance testing tool, supports faster and more automated software delivery lifecycles. Here’s a look at what’s new:

AI-assisted workflows: Four new commands—k6 x agent, k6 x mcp, k6 x docs, and k6 x explore—enable deeper integration with AI workflows and agents, and help teams use k6 programmatically.

Enhanced browser module: Expanded Playwright API compatibility makes it easier than ever to adapt existing Playwright tests to k6.

A JSON summary output: End-of-test results are now easier for CI/CD systems and AI agents to consume and take action on.
