ADHD getting worse? Read this.

Across Reddit and TikTok, women with ADHD are sharing a familiar story: In their late 30s or early 40s, brain fog intensified, emotions became harder to manage, and sleep and focus fell apart. Some struggled at work, home, and in their relationships, all while being told they were too young for perimenopause or that their symptoms were simply part of ADHD.

That’s why a study finding that women with ADHD may experience perimenopausal symptoms up to 10 years earlier—and more severely—is striking such a nerve. For many women, it validates changes they feel deeply but have struggled to get recognized.

If brain fog, mood changes, poor sleep, or difficulty focusing are getting harder to manage—and you’ve been told it’s just ADHD or that you’re too young for perimenopause—it may be time to look at the bigger picture. A Midi clinician can help connect the dots between your symptoms, cycle changes, and health history and find the right next step for you.

Q: “I’m in early perimenopause. Are birth control pills or HRT better for me at this stage?

A: It depends on your symptoms, health history, and whether you need contraception. Combination birth control pills contain estrogen and progestin — the same types of hormones used in HRT, but typically at higher doses. They also suppress ovulation, which can help smooth out the hormone swings that contribute to perimenopause symptoms, provide more predictable periods, and prevent pregnancy.

HRT uses lower hormone doses, but it doesn’t prevent pregnancy or consistently control ovulation and cycles. For many women in early perimenopause who still need contraception, birth control pills can be a great option. A Midi clinician can help determine which approach is right for you.
