Hey there,

Let’s cover how to monitor your cluster's health and optimize its performance.

Preventing common causes of outages

Test cluster resilience: Use the test primary failover feature (available on Dedicated tier/M10+ clusters) to simulate a replica set election and verify that your application handles the node change gracefully, preventing downtime.

Ensure auto-scaling is enabled: Automatically manage sudden spikes in load by enabling auto-scaling to adjust your cluster's compute and storage capacity as needed.

Review query efficiency: Optimize performance before production load by using the Performance Advisor (available on Dedicated tier/M10+ clusters) to identify slow queries and generate index suggestions for frequent operations.

Ensuring you're alerted when something goes wrong

Configure alerts: Set up alerts to monitor key metrics (such as CPU, connections, or replication lag) and route notifications to the right team via email or a third-party APM tool (e.g., Slack, PagerDuty).

Understand key metrics: Familiarize yourself with critical performance indicators like query targeting (ratio of documents examined to documents returned) and replication lag to understand the health of your cluster.

How to respond to an issue with your cluster

Agent Skills: Provide expert instructions that apply MongoDB best practices to AI coding agents. The MongoDB Connection skill tunes how your application connects to Atlas, while the Query Optimizer skill identifies slow operations, analyzes indexes, and applies recommendations so your queries run efficiently. Install the plugin in your preferred AI tool (like Cursor, Claude Code, Gemini CLI, or VS Code).

Check connectivity: Diagnose if the connection from your application is failing or if the issue is database-side.

Explore scaling your cluster: If connected, use the Atlas monitoring tools to check for resource exhaustion. If hardware resources (like CPU or RAM) are saturated or the cluster has hit a service limit, initiate a vertical scale-up of storage or compute.

Identify Slow Queries: Review the Query Profiler (available on Dedicated tier/M10+ clusters) to find long-running operations. If frequent, slow queries are tying up resources, immediately review and revise your indexing strategy to address them.
