An alert appears in one system, the user says something else, and the approved procedure sits in a document. Someone still has to bring the evidence together and decide what matters. The same thing happens when a company uses AI. A strong model still has to work with messy processes, old files, business software and security rules. Someone must understand the problem, build the solution and help people use it safely. That person is often called a Forward Deployed Engineer, or FDE. The title sounds complicated, but the job is easy to describe. An FDE works with a customer, finds a valuable problem, builds the software and makes it work in the customer’s environment. Andrew Ng’s X post Andrew Ng described AI Forward Deployed Engineer as one of Silicon Valley’s new “buzzy” jobs and discussed why OpenAI and Anthropic are building these teams. Aaron Levie’s LinkedIn post Box CEO Aaron Levie argued that forward-deployed engineers and equivalent roles are becoming important for enterprise AI deployments. The pay reflects that responsibility. OpenAI advertises $185,000 to $325,000 plus equity for a Forward Deployed Software Engineer in San Francisco. Anthropic lists $280,000 to $320,000 for a hands-on FDE role. These are senior US jobs, not beginner salaries or guaranteed outcomes. They show the value of turning an AI model into a useful system. AWS committed $1 billion to a forward-deployed engineering unit, and Reuters reported 42-fold growth in demand for FDE and similar roles from 2023 to 2025. Companies have strong models.
