A beautifully written apology can still be an empty one.

AI can find gentle words for you. It can make you sound patient, thoughtful, even brave. But when the person you hurt writes back, you are the one who has to read it. And if they ask you to change, no sentence, however perfect, will do that work for you.

I think our relationship with AI will be shaped by moments like this.

Not only by dramatic questions about smarter machines. By ordinary things: a birthday message we almost send without reading, a child’s question we answer too quickly, an idea we abandon because the first suggestion sounds good, an hour we save and immediately fill with more work.

There is real kindness in useful tools. A difficult day becomes lighter. A blank page becomes less frightening. Someone who has never had the right words may finally find a way to begin.

But help can quietly become substitution.

These forty rules are not about loving a machine. They’re about what we owe ourselves and one another while learning to live with one.

Some are easy. Others may make you uncomfortable.
