Layouts Timeline

A new way to edit layouts

Hey there,

Today we're announcing our new layouts timeline. It makes working with layouts faster and more intuitive.

Highlight to select

Highlight to select

A subtle but significant change to how layouts work. When you click and drag on the layouts timeline, you'll see a highlighted area appear (same as before). This highlighted area represents the part of your video that you want to change. The crucial difference is that you need to pick a layout before any layout is applied to the highlighted area.

In the old layouts timeline, when you made a selection, you were already applying a layout. We'd default to whichever layout you last used. But your last layout isn't always what you need. And so using layouts felt a little cumbersome, because you were often overriding the default selection.

In this new version, you always need to pick a layout (no more defaulting to your previous one), but this means it's always the right one.

Multi-select

Multi-select

We've added support for multi-select when adding and changing layouts.

Hold Shift, then click and drag to make an additional highlight. You can do this as many times as you want. While you drag, you'll see a preview of what you're highlighting on the canvas so that you know what you're about to edit.

For changing a bunch of existing layouts just hold Command to select more than one.

I've been using this feature a lot! You can see your transcript below the waveform and click on words or phrases to add layouts.

What do you think of the changes?
