Just Back From

KYOTO

In Cherry Blossom Season

Dear Traveler,

Our travelers come back with stories and honest advice. Just Back From is our new series, real notes from the road. What they wish they'd known.

Kyoto in cherry blossom season

Shared by Myra, a regular Travelopod traveler.

Myra's Notes

“ There is a moment in Kyoto during the Sakura season when the city feels almost imaginary. Pale pink petals drift across temple steps, geishas disappear down lantern-lit lanes in Gion, every canal and shrine looks staged for a film.”

I've just returned. It was extraordinary, and a lesson in what I'd do differently.

The first mistake is assuming cherry blossom season is about blossoms. It isn't. It's about timing, light and crowds. Kyoto in peak bloom is beautiful but very busy. Don't go where everyone goes, go earlier, later, or slightly sideways.

I'd wake up earlier. Temples at 7am feel like a different world to 11am. I'd walk residential streets where cherry trees hang over canals and bakeries are just opening. My favorite moments were on unnamed streets, petals collecting like soft pink snow.

Fewer temples, more neighborhoods. Kyoto is best slow, walking, stopping for tea, sitting by the river at sunset.

And stay longer. Kyoto is a city of details, shop softening the afternoon light, moss gardens, the sound of wooden sandals on stone. Next time, I'd travel less like a tourist, more like a temporary local.
