An MCP server for branch-native Postgres

Xata is branch-native Postgres. A branch is a copy of your database that shares storage with the original, so you make one for a single job and delete it when you are done. That is a different product from the Xata Lite you signed up for.

This week we shipped an MCP server for it, so a coding agent can make that copy itself. It creates a branch, works in it against real data, and deletes it when the run is over.

What that looks like

We tried it on our own analytics database and asked whether an index was worth adding. The agent branched, measured, and said no. Then it flagged something nobody had asked about: 78.7% of 2.1 million rows share one value in the column we sort by, so deep pages stop being deterministic unless the sort carries a tiebreaker. That only shows up in real data.
