Hi John,

Every Xata Postgres branch now ships with a built-in PgBouncer connection pooler, included on every plan.

Modern applications don't just open a few long-lived connections anymore. They spin up AI agents, launch testing sandboxes, and create short-lived environments on demand. Each of those opens database connections, often briefly, but at scale.

A Postgres connection consumes about 5MB of backend memory. Fine for a handful of app servers; breaks for serverless functions, edge workers, or anything connecting per request. Postgres wants fewer, long-lived connections; modern apps produce many short-lived ones. The pooler reconciles that.

If you're already using the Xata serverless proxy, you're benefiting from pooling right now. Nothing to change.

If you connect to Postgres directly, append -pooler to your branch ID:

postgresql[:]//user:pass@branch-id-pooler[.]us-east-1[.]xata[.]sh:5432/postgres

That's the change. One line.

Every pooler is pre-tuned: transaction mode by default, max_client_conn=10,000, default_pool_size=0.9 × max_connections, max_prepared_statements=1,000.

When scale to zero is enabled on a branch, the pooler scales down with it. When the branch wakes up, the pooler comes back automatically.

Keep using -rw for LISTEN/NOTIFY, session-level advisory locks, temp tables and SET commands, schema migrations (pg_dump and pg_restore use SET), and long-running analytics queries.
