Setting up RudderStack:
Creating a Source & Destination
Howdy!
We hope you've enjoyed getting to know the RudderStack app.
Below is a quick-reference guide for setting up connections. Our users have told us that it's helpful for onboarding new team members and setting up new connections.
As always, we're here if you have any questions.
Step 1: Sign in to RudderStack
Login to your workspace to get started.
Step 2a: Setup a source
Visit the integration directory to locate a source integration that you can trust to provide you with reliable test data to pipe in to RudderStack – most use the Javascript SDK on a personal or test site to send test events –– but you could also use another source or postman to send synthetic events.
If you're looking for a low lift, here is the test site we use in our demos–complete with Javascript SDK–all you have to do is input your dataplane URL and write key from the Javascript SDK source you are about to setup (see below).
To setup the Javascript source, find it in our integrations directory.
Step 2b: Copy your data plane URL and Write Key from RudderStack
Because we already added the Javascript SDK to the header in this test site, the second step is as simple as copying a few values from the "Connections" screen and adding them to the demo site (or a source of your choosing). Find the Data Plane URL and Write key for the SDK in the connections view.
*if looking for information on adding another SDK as your test source, see documentation.
Then visit the demo site that our solutions engineer, Ryan, built for product demos (or in the SDK of your choice) and add your Data Plane URL and Write Key:
Now you’re ready to send test events!
Step 3: Open the Live Events Viewer and send test events
First, click on your JavaScript Source in RudderStack and then click on the Live Events button at the top right of the screen.
More info on the Live Event viewer in our docs here.
Now head back to the demo site and click a few buttons to send test events.
Choose between track events, identify calls, auto send page events, or send a custom event to see what different payloads look like in RudderStack.
And now you should see these events flowing into the JavaScript Source in real-time:
And that's it!
Out of the box, the RudderStack Javascript SDK is will send page calls, complete with standard properties, but you can easily instrument and customize track and identify calls to suit your tracking needs.
You can learn about our methods and API spec in our docs.
Take it a step further and see events in an analytics tool or warehouse destination!
We don't detail it in this email, but you can also easily set up a test Google Analytics 4 or Mixpanel account and add it as a destination in RudderStack. Just set it up as a destination, then trigger more events from the demo site and see data flow end-to-end, real-time*, in the Real Time report in GA4.
*There might be some latency using the free tier, but events will start populating after 45 seconds or so.
Thanks for taking RudderStack out for a test drive!
