Hi John,
It’s Michael again, your trusty CRM Coach. Now that you’ve added contacts, it’s time to make your CRM truly yours by customizing the fields to fit your specific business needs.
I see you've already started creating your custom fields — congratulations! Most users go their entire trials without finding this feature, so you're already leagues ahead of the pack ;)
But did you know that you can create custom fields on your contacts, companies, and your pipelines?
It can get a little confusing to figure out where exactly a field should go, so here's a simple way to think that through:
1. Is this piece of information going to vary person-by-person (even if they work at the same company)? If YES, then this should be a contact field. If NO, this is a company field.
2. Is this piece of information going to be the same across everyone at the same company? If YES, then this should be a company field. If NO, this is a contact field.
3. Is this piece of information only relevant if someone is going through a process (i.e. is this something you would only know about someone if they were going through that process)? If YES, then this should be a field on your pipeline. If NO, go back to step 1 and 2 to figure out if this should be a contact or company field.
In one handy flow chart, that will look like this:
Because the data you collect on your contacts, leads, prospects, clients etc. is unique to your business, it's important to create all the custom fields you'd need to store that data.
Having custom fields for all your important information lets you easily find your data, and also filter your database by those specific fields to pull out the people you're looking for.
If you need recommendations for your own custom fields or have any questions, just reply to this email.
Happy customizing,
Michael
