DatoCMS Product Roundup
👋 John,
I fully intended to send this out earlier, but I was a little too preoccupied melting in the heatwave Europe experienced in the last weeks 🥵 I'd share pictures as proof, but I'm positive NOBODY wants that.
The rest of the peeps, however, were definitely not melting, and shipped a bunch of stuff I can finally share with you 👀
The big one (and my personal fave, since I've only wanted this since forever) is that DatoCMS now has Dark Mode 🌚 It follows your OS preference automatically: switch your system to dark and DatoCMS switches with you, no configuration needed. Not a fan of that? Select your mode manually. Dark mode covers all the views, including the Schema Builder, Record Editor, Media Library, Settings pages, your Dashboard, all of it
Projects only have one focal point per asset now. Originally you could define specific focal points per image, but we kinda figured that a face doesn't move when you translate a page between English, Italian, or German 😑 So we got rid of that. Every asset now has a single focal point: one value, shared across all locales.
Speaking of focal points, the CMA also provides a tidier format because of that. When you want an API that reflects the new reality, opt in. With the flag on, default_field_metadata switches to a field-keyed shape: alt, title, and custom_data remain locale-keyed, but focal_point appears once at the top level.
Staying on theme with assets, responsive images now size themselves across every SDK. Getting correctly-sized responsive images used to mean adding a sizes prop that mirrored your CSS layout, and keeping it in sync as the design changed. No more. Update any DatoCMS framework SDK and you can stop dealing with that.
This doesn't mean videos can't get some TLC too. You can now choose the poster frame for any video right from the asset editor. Choose the perfect moment, pin it, and that frame becomes the video's thumbnail everywhere. No re-encoding, no external tools, no guessing which frame the player will grab.
For the editors, you can also see exactly when each version of a record was live. The version history of a record now doubles as a publication timeline. Every version tells you when it was created, along with the exact window it was actually published (and a green dot shows you which version is currently published).
The AI Translations plugin brings back the bulk translations workflow, and also brings back Claude (which was broken for a while).
And finally, on the security front, we've finallllly (ikr?) introduced email verification. Before a handful of sensitive actions, we now make sure the email address on your account really belongs to you. It runs quietly in the background, and most of the time you won't even notice it.
Now, with the summer in full swing, we (sadly) are NOT going on a 3 month long vacation, but we'll be focusing on a bunch of tweaks, updates, improvements, and "boring" things, so I might not have any quote-unquote-✨shiny✨ feature releases until the fall.
But to wrap things up, as usual, join me in giving our brand new partners a big 👋 as we welcome goodbase 🇮🇹, Webwirkung 🇨🇭, Essential Code 🇦🇹, Incentro CX 🇪🇸, and Laniakea Studio 🇫🇮 into the DatoCMS Partner Ecosystem.
PS: If you're an agency, what're you waiting for? Join the partner network so our bearded wizard Matteo 🧙 can guide you though implementing projects better.
That's it for now. I'll see you in the next one.
