OK I'll be honest, I've been slacking on this a bit with SO MUCH going on, so this time around I'm sending a pretty packed roundup of everything that's been happening behind the scenes with the crew.

What's up in the CMS 👇
We shipped out the ability to have pre-filtered linked records with saved filters. If that's a mouth-full, editors accidentally linking the wrong records because the list was too broad was a real problem for some of you. To address this, we've introduced a way to pre-filter linked records with saved filters, letting you control exactly which records appear when editors browse items to link.
We also rolled out Permissions for Asset Collections. You can now assign specific permissions for users to assets within Collections, including read, write, and a new dedicated `move` permission that controls whether users can move assets from one collection to another.
If you've been using Visual Editing, you probably noticed everything was orange 🍊. That was an issue if your own brand colours were orange. Too much orange going on. Overlays blending into things. Big usability issue. To address this, the overlay color used to highlight editable areas can now be customized via a `hue` property (accepts values 0–359) in the configuration.
If you're a heavy media area user, we gotta make sure you've got the peace of mind that there's no shady sh*t going on in your uploads. Every file uploaded to the DatoCMS Media Area is now automatically scanned for viruses and malware. No configuration, no opt-in or workflow changes required from your side.
Need to prep for building custom/private plugins in your project? The Astro and Next.js starter kits now come with a private DatoCMS plugin already wired up, giving you a ready-made foundation to start building custom editor experiences from day one, with no separate repo, and no manual installation.
As a worth-mentioning-side-note, our Astro starter is also upgraded to Astro 6. This includes all official integrations (`@astrojs/node`, `@astrojs/react`, `@astrojs/check`) and `@datocms/cli` v4. This also means the minimum Node version you need is now v22.
A BIG change is us quietly killing one of the most clunky rituals of the DatoCMS CLI setup. OAuth login is now the recommended way to authenticate. No more copy-pasting tokens into env vars 50 times a day. `datocms login` → browser opens, you're in. `datocms link` → pick your project interactively. Done.
There's also a bunch of refactors and improvements worth a mention:We made the Structured Text field a LOT faster.
The Schema Import/Export plugin now supports selecting multiple models instead of one at a time.
The Dall-e Image Generator is now just the Image Generator since we've updated it to use both, OpenAI AND Google models.
Record Comments now supports rich mentions - letting you tag users, fields, records, assets, or models, with notification support.
Automatic Environment Backups now support multi-cadence schedules (daily, weekly, bi-monthly, monthly) and on-demand "backup now".
Audit Logs got an updated UI with better filtering.
If you're on the free plan we have raised the CMA limit from 10K to 25K monthly API calls.

I spoke to some of you on the whole "AI" topic, particularly about how AI features are used in CMS workflows from an editorial perspective AND technical perspective. So while we're working on a few things that are relevant, I put down some thoughts on why we're not an "AI-first" Headless CMS.
Speaking of AI, another conversation that I had a bone to pick with was the whole "Why do I need a Headless CMS when I can vibe code stuff". Which is a valid question. But I still wanted to s̶a̶v̶e̶ ̶m̶y̶ ̶j̶o̶b̶ share my thoughts on how far you can get with vibes, and when you need a CMS.
As a cheeky little last minute April Fool's joke we launched Tuply in the CMS. Tuply did nothing. Tuply was our nostalgia for Clippy. Some of you were confused about it, and apologies if Tuply annoyed you, but for the rest of you, thanks for sharing a laugh with us 🫶🏽
On a serious note, I then had some INCREDIBLE chats with some of our partners.Merlin is a small Amsterdam-based code boutique that ships high-end digital experiences. And when we say high end, we mean HIGH end. So we caught up with Mees to talk about mirroring bold design in structured content.
Another partner of ours, San Rita, recently launched a new website for themselves which is a GORGEOUS interactive 3D topographic map inspired by their fly fishing days in California, and built using yours truly. So we caught up with Alexis to talk about trading templates for topography.
