Compare Customer.io alternatives for a small SaaS team, including Brew, Loops, Sequenzy, Userlist, and Resend. Features, limits, and pricing reviewed.

Brew publishes this comparison. We reviewed the linked product documentation on September 28, 2026; this is a documentation comparison, not a claim of hands-on testing of every platform. Check current plan limits on the vendor's pricing page.
The founder set up Customer.io at launch, wrote the welcome email, and planned to build the rest of the lifecycle program once things calmed down. Months later the welcome email is still the only live message, and the trial flow sits in draft next to tracked events that no segment uses yet.
Customer.io is one of the most capable lifecycle messaging platforms. It sends email, SMS, push, in-app and other channels. It segments on event history, and it has objects, a data pipeline product and an MCP server. A team with a data engineer and a lifecycle marketer buys it for those features.
A two-to-ten-person SaaS team often cannot keep all of that running. Somebody has to design the data model, keep events flowing and build every email. This guide covers alternatives that are simpler to run, and what you give up by moving.
Before comparing, rule out a switch you do not need. Customer.io's pricing page includes transactional email, Design Studio and an AI Agent in beta. Its MCP server reaches every channel it supports. Its startup program is for new customers only, so it cannot fix the price of an account you already have. If your problem is price, compare plans on the pricing page before migrating.

| Tool | Best reason to switch | What you give up | Entry pricing |
|---|---|---|---|
| Loops | Simpler SaaS email platform, transactional included | Channels beyond email; event-history segments | Free up to 1,000 newest contacts; paid plans by contact count |
| Brew | AI builds your on-brand emails and automations | Channels beyond email; preference centers; event-history segments | Free plan; Growth $99/mo |
| Sequenzy | Stripe-derived lifecycle events and built-in stop conditions | Customer.io's data model depth | Free up to 2,500 emails/mo, then priced per email |
| Userlist | Company-level messaging for B2B SaaS, in-app messages | AI generation; channels beyond email and in-app | 14-day trial; priced by users |
| Resend | Developer-first: transactional API, broadcasts, automations | Customer.io's multichannel messaging and object relationships | Transactional free up to 3,000/mo; marketing free up to 1,000 contacts |
Loops combines marketing and transactional email for SaaS teams. You get campaigns, event-triggered workflows, and a Stripe integration with over twenty events. Setup is mostly sending events and contact properties. There is no data model to design first. The free plan covers 1,000 newest contacts and 4,000 sends a month. Paid plans are priced by subscribed contacts with unlimited sends.
Choose it if you want the least setup and write your own emails.
Brew generates emails from your brand and builds automations from a description, so a small team without a designer or lifecycle marketer can ship a full program. It sends marketing and transactional email from one account. Transactional sends run on a domain with a transactional purpose, as the transactional emails guide explains. It connects to Stripe, Supabase, Clerk, Shopify and others, and agents can operate it through MCP.
Brew's Customer.io migration guide lists the gaps. Liquid templates run natively, and automations, delays, splits and transactional messages map directly. Segments that filter on event history need their signals written to contact properties first. Journey attributes, object relationships, snippets and preference centers have no direct equivalent.
Choose it if building the emails is your bottleneck and your segmentation fits in contact properties.
Sequenzy targets SaaS lifecycle email with AI-written sequences and a Stripe integration. The integration derives events such as saas.trial_will_end and saas.churn, and adds MRR and LTV to contacts. Sequences support inactivity and frequency triggers, wait-for-event steps, and one stop condition checked before each step. Pricing is per email with unlimited contacts.
Choose it if most of your lifecycle logic follows billing state and you want it built in.
Userlist is built for B2B SaaS, where a company account has many users. It supports company-level automation, behavior-based campaigns, broadcasts, transactional email and in-app messages. Plans scale with users, and every plan has a 14-day trial.
Choose it if you currently use Customer.io objects mainly to message accounts, and you do not need its other channels.
Resend began as a transactional email API. It now also has broadcasts and, since April 2026, Automations with delays, event waits and branches. You can create templates with React Email in code or use its visual editor for Templates and Broadcasts.
Choose it if your team is engineering-led and wants email defined in code next to the product.
Brew's migration guide gives an order that works for most destinations:
identify and track calls. In Brew, a transactional_message_id becomes the triggerEventId you fire, and message_data becomes the payload.Only one platform should send live email to a given contact at a time.
